Variant Office was invited to refurbish and extend a modest end of terrace in the heart of Dulwich. Our client was hugely underwhelmed with the house in its current state and we were tasked with changing this perception by developing a home suitable for modern living.

As the site footprint was small we wanted to maximise the sense of space by connecting the rear extension with the garden by way of corner glazed extension. The perforated brick screens help screen the interior from neighbouring properties.

Bold use of colour and materials create different atmospheres throughout the house.

We imagined the interior of the house being a single space, subdivided by a large piece of joinery to create more intimate spaces to live, cook, eat and work. The traditional Victorian house was transformed by inserting a modern open treaded stair that allows the light to penetrate deep into the house.

“From the start of the project I was involved and included. Throughout the process, any questions I had, were answered promptly, effectively, reassuringly and sensitively. I had some ideas of the concept of the renovation of the house and Ashvin incorporated these ideas and developed them into a design that flows and works seamlessly and easily with designated areas within an open plan living space. I was challenged by Ashvin to look at different ideas, concepts, and materials, some of which I would not have considered and was supported in going with them. A sign that the architect had the vision and confidence to see that the house would work not only in function but visually.

I was challenged by Ashvin to look at different ideas, concepts, and materials, some of which I would not have considered and was supported in going with them. A sign that the architect had the vision and confidence to see that the house would work not only in function but visually. His knowledge of all the legal elements of the project supported the ease of planning and construction and throughout the whole process.

The site is challenging and again his vision of what would work without compromising the design was a sign of both his skill, knowledge, and professionalism. Now the project has finished and on time and within budget, I have a magnificent home both inside and out. It sits beautifully and sensitively within the site and its environment. A home in which it is a joy to live. I have no hesitation in recommending Variant Office to anyone contemplating any project.”

01

Do One Thing Really Well

We are designers who use interiors as our primary medium. We create spaces that energize and amplify the way people live, move, work and play today by using Experience-Centric Design, which deepens and broadens our knowledge of emerging global consumer and demographic trends.

02

Teams Spark Ideas

We believe in listening and working with our clients, advisors, consultants and internal teams to drive the best design solutions. We listen, interpret – then lead. Our shared desire to explore new territories means that we love to work collaboratively and create experiences via exceptional spaces.

03

Repetition Kills Creativity

In rejecting the notion of a signature or house style, we foster a sense of natural inquisitiveness. Together we continue to learn and evolve our aesthetic so that it remains relevant through constant reinvention to better satisfy the needs of end-users.

04

Luxury Doesn’t Mean Expensive

We understand the limitations of a budget and believe that a great space needn’t be expensive. We enrich our projects with deep thinking and narrative, placing today’s luxury audience at the heart of each space to ensure its lasting appeal.

05

Design For The Greater Good

We think that exceptional design shouldn’t cost the Earth. We have a policy of specifying sustainable materials and believe in LEAD certified and BREAM interiors. We also wholeheartedly support the work of A Trillion Trees and the Blue Marine Foundation, which creates marine reserves and sustainable fishing models.
